Outlook: Spring 2012 Anime
There are countless charts and webpages out there listing synopses and trailers of all the anime being aired in Spring 2012 so I won’t bore you with a list copied wholesale. Instead, lets have a look at the upcoming titles that I might have a go at watching!
Synopsis: In the beginning of the 21st century, a world war breaks out over interplanetary travel technology. The environment is pretty much destroyed so mankind leaves Earth and starts Star Calendar 00. Entertainment and songs become heavily regulated and eventually banned due to their power to move people, but a brave idol group puts on guerilla performances in the name of a famous act from earlier times that sang to Earth’s bitter end, AKB48. The illegal revival group’s name is… AKB0048.
Comments: This isn’t AKB48’s first venture into but it’s certainly shaping up to be the first full-barrelled attempt at establishing a foothold for AKB48 in the anime industry. A formidable production team as well as many big name seiyuus hired to voice major characters ensure that most aniotaku will give this series a go.
Personally, I’m quite excited for this as the plot is playing to the strengths of many of the production team. Blending science fiction, music, and girls is what Satelite does best and apparently there’s going to be some epic battles and (maybe?) robots or powered suits of some sort. Amongst the AKB48 girls selected to lend their voices to this anime, there are quite a few that I believe have what it takes to give life to their characters and even make themselves noticed. I am definitely watching this and will probably attempt to do an ep by ep post series depending on if it turns out to be good or not.
Synopsis: The 2nd part of the Fate/Zero TV series. Based on the Fate/Zero novel by Urobuchi Gen and Type-moon. The story is set 10 years before the events of Fate/Stay Night and chronicles the events of the 4th Holy Grail War. The truth which unfolded behind the battle between Shirou’s foster father, Rin’s father, and the younger Kotomine Kirei, is finally revealed…
Comments: As sequels go, this is the only one in this season where I have watched the 1st part of. Being a fan of Type-moon’s character designs, I had highly anticipated this and the first part delivered fairly well. However, Saber seems to be very out of place amongst a cast of rather badass servants and masters. Hopefully it will all resolve satisfactorily in an epic battle in the final episode…or something. I will be watching this to see what happens but won’t blog about it since the first part is already over.
Synopsis: In the far future, the elevated irradiation from the sun has destroyed the environment of the earth and the birthrate of humans has drastically decreased. The government controls society with an army of cloned soldiers called “Ideal Children (IC)”. Sam Coin is a trader in the desert. One day, he saves a beautiful woman Maya, who has been chased by Theseus, a corps of IC. He shelters her in his trade ship, but the destroyers of Theseus surround Sam and Maya.
Comments: I like me some good scifi so I will be watching the first episode and re-evaluating after that. The premise seems to indicate that there will be some exploration of a dystopian society which will be interesting, but lets hope that there isn’t any homosexuality injected into this series.
For everything else I haven’t listed, there are 1 or 2 more that I will give a go but I’m not expecting anything particularly amazing. Stay tuned though, or recommend me some in the comments! I will certainly check out the 1st eps of anything that’s recommended.
