Tune Highlight: Over the Top from the Super Robot Wars OG: The Inspectors OST
It’s been a long time since the last Tune Highlight I wrote, and I sort of remember them to be pretty fun to write, so here’s another one. Of course with a significant portion of them not being mecha tunes, here’s one which is rightfully so, what with the blog name and all that. I believe almost everyone who’s reading this post knows about the Super Robot Wars tactical RPG series and its animated offshoots, so I’ll spare you the introductions and jump right in.
Contrary to the title of the track, the tune does not start off with a bang. Instead it surprisingly moves off with a militaristic beat strongly suggestive of the regimentation and order one would see as battle preparations go on. The strings form a pensive mood in support, recognising that the upcoming trial will result in loss, as though it were a track from a real war movie. The synthetic vocals which come up in the middle are fitting in this respect, as it reminds the listener of past sacrifices and the pain which accompanied them.
It feels down-to-earth in this respect, given that the game’s OST (which the anime grabs a lot of its music from) consistently brings up character themes which are most outstanding in being able to fully flesh out the individual characteristics and heroics of each and every character we grow to love. This tune, original to the anime’s score, weaves a collaborative mood, which admittedly doesn’t sound too much like camaraderie, but more a shared sense of dread which ultimately is surmounted by a collective sense of purpose and resolution, ending on a relative high note.
